Tiger Shovelnose Catfish 4”

Tiger Shovelnose Catfish 2” - A Majestic Freshwater Predator

The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish (Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum) is a striking and popular species for freshwater aquarium enthusiasts who enjoy keeping exotic and impressive fish. At 2 inches, this juvenile catfish is the perfect size to begin acclimating to your home aquarium while ensuring healthy growth potential. Known for its distinctive tiger-like stripes and long, shovel-shaped snout, this fish adds a unique aesthetic to any aquatic setup.

Size and Growth Potential

Although our Tiger Shovelnose Catfish arrives at 2 inches, these fish can grow rapidly under optimal conditions, reaching up to 24-30 inches in length at full maturity. Prospective buyers should be prepared to upgrade their tank and accommodate this species’ impressive growth over time.

Temperament and Behavior

This catfish is generally peaceful with similarly sized tank mates but can exhibit predatory behavior toward smaller fish. Their active and curious nature makes them an engaging addition, but they thrive best in environments where they are not stressed by overly aggressive species.

Recommended Tank Size

Due to their potential adult size, it is recommended to provide a minimum tank size of 125 gallons for young adults, with larger tanks preferred as they mature. A spacious aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas helps replicate their natural habitat in South American rivers.

Water Parameters and Environment

• Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
• pH Level: 6.0-7.5
• Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH)
• Filtration: Strong filtration and moderate water flow are essential

Maintaining clean, well-oxygenated water is crucial for the health of your Tiger Shovelnose Catfish. Regular water changes and monitoring of water quality will help prevent disease and promote longevity.

Diet and Feeding

In the wild, Tiger Shovelnose Catfish are carnivorous, feeding on smaller fish and invertebrates. In captivity, they accept a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, shrimp, and fish fillets. High-quality carnivore pellets can also be introduced gradually. Feeding should be done once or twice daily, ensuring not to overfeed to maintain water quality.

Compatibility and Tank Mates

Choosing appropriate tank mates is essential for peaceful coexistence. Suitable companions include larger, non-aggressive fish that will not fit into the catfish’s mouth. Avoid keeping with very small fish or slow-moving species that may be seen as prey. The Tiger Shovelnose Catfish can be kept alone or in groups when young but may become territorial as they grow.
