About This Fish

Red Chili Oscar 3" – Vibrant Freshwater Aquarium Fish

The Red Chili Oscar, measuring around 3 inches, is a captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium. Known for its striking red-orange hues and lively personality, this species is a favorite among both beginners and experienced aquarists. Its moderate size and dynamic coloration make it a standout centerpiece fish that brings vitality and movement to your tank.

Size and Growth

At 3 inches upon purchase, the Red Chili Oscar will typically grow to an adult size of 10-12 inches. Their growth rate depends on diet and tank conditions, so providing optimal care will ensure your fish reaches its full vibrant potential.

Temperament and Behavior

Oscars are known for their intelligent and interactive nature, often recognizing their owners and displaying playful behaviors. The Red Chili Oscar is moderately aggressive and territorial, especially as it matures. Understanding their temperament helps maintain harmony in a community tank and prevents stress-induced health issues.

Tank Size and Setup

Given their adult size and activity level, a minimum tank size of 55 gallons is recommended for a single Red Chili Oscar. Larger tanks are preferable for multiple fish or community setups. A well-decorated aquarium with sturdy plants, hiding spots, and open swimming areas mimics their natural habitat and supports their territorial instincts.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 74-81°F (23-27°C)
  • pH Range: 6.0-8.0, ideally neutral to slightly alkaline
  • Water Hardness: 5-20 dGH

Maintaining stable water parameters is crucial for the health and coloration of the Red Chili Oscar. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to keep nitrates low and water clean.

Diet and Feeding

The Red Chili Oscar is omnivorous and thrives on a varied diet. High-quality pellets formulated for cichlids form the staple of their nutrition. Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms to enhance coloration and vitality. Occasional vegetables like peas or spinach can be offered to provide fiber and variety.

Compatibility with Other Fish

Because of their territorial nature, Red Chili Oscars are best kept with similarly sized, robust species. Smaller fish may be seen as prey. Ideal tank mates include other large cichlids, plecos, and catfish species. Avoid overcrowding and provide ample space to reduce aggression and stress.

Unique Selling Points

  • Striking red and orange coloration that intensifies with good care
  • Highly interactive and intelligent, often recognizing their owner
  • Relatively hardy species for cichlid enthusiasts
  • Perfect choice for aquarists seeking a vibrant centerpiece fish

Love the actual fish. The packaging was horrible. It was a regular box that the fish was thrown into. I’ve never seen anything like it. They said the packaging on the website was supposed to be very professional, it wasnt. There was no temperature control at all with the packaging. But thats my only complaint. I got UPS shipping label quickly. And the fish thankfully was healthy and as described in the site.

Thank you for the feedback, Natalya. I’m glad to hear the fish arrived healthy and as described—that’s always our top priority. We do use insulated packaging and temperature control when needed, but I appreciate you pointing this out and will continue working to improve the experience.

Due to a delay and the July 4th holiday & weekend, the poor little fellow actually survived being packaged in a bag for over six days! This is a testimate to the health of the fish Rob sells, as well as his care in packaging.
